Life Conversations: A Designer Plan
Romans 1:18-20 (NIV)
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
I. The Design, Part 1
a. God’s desire to be known
v 1:19 What may be known about God is plain to see
b. His invisible qualities
v 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen
c. What has been made
v 1:21 God’s invisible qualities . . . are understood from what has been made
II. Undoing the Design
a. Thread 1. Godless thinking (idolatry)
For although they knew God, then neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him
b. Thread 2. Unnatural behavior (sexual morality)
God gave them over to the desires of their hearts
c. Thread 3. Worthless Thinking
Just like they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a worthless mind.
III. The Design, Part 2
a. God’s Kindness
v 2:4 do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
b. God’s justice
v 2:11 For God does not show favoritism
c. God’s Spirit
v 2:29 A person becomes a Jew inwardly and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by a written code.
IV. Corrupting the design
a. The wrong pair of pants: Human judgment
v 2:1. You have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, because you do the same things.
b. The wrong accessories: human pride
v 2:5 because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath.
c. The wrong material: Spiritual cloth
It is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but those who do it.
V. Key truths
a. We are obligated to Gentiles and Jews to talk about the Design of God for humanity.
v 1:14 I am obligated both Greek and Gentiles . . . that is why I am eager to preach the Gospel
b. God’s original design promoted relationship between God and man
c. By our own pride, we corrupt the design.
d. But God’s Design cannot be thwarted . . . . .
